A phrase we often hear, one common to believers and unbelievers, tells us, "The truth will set you free." We hear this phrase in relation to many topics. We want our kids to tell us the truth and assure them the truth will set them free. We want a friend, co-worker, or spouse to be honest and remind them the truth will set them free.
Of course truth is important. Of course honesty matters. Dishonesty is like a tie around our hands and with every lie -whether intentional or not- it gets tighter and tighter. So, this phrase has merit. However, this phrase telling us freedom comes from truth, isn't just a popular quote. It is straight from the Word of God.
Many people take this verse as being honest after withholding truth will free us. And that is true. But let's take a look at another verse John gives us.
