The Desires of My Heart

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

Three.  That is the number of times I ran across this verse in less than five hours.  Think God is trying to show me something?  Hmm...

This verse is often taken out of context in a big way.  You see, right now I would really love to take my daughters to the salon for a much over do girls day.  Now that we are in the Christmas season, I would like to take my kids to the Plaza for a horse drawn carriage ride while we look at Christmas lights.  I would enjoy a mini shopping spree at a cute little boutique I recently discovered.

According to Psalm 37:4, I should have these things, right?  Not necessarily.

God promises to give us the desires of our hearts when we delight in Him.  But the truth is when we truly delight in Him, our desires become His desires.  When we put our focus completely on God we want what He wants.  Things like high-lights or big jewelry seem less important and things like serving and helping others become more important to us.

Our heart should seek to follow God.  Seek to serve and help others.  Seek to further the Kingdom of Heaven.  When our desires become anything less, we should examine what we are really delighting in.

I want to challenge you to take a look at what you desire right now.  Is it something to glorify self or God?

Sweet Blessings~

  1. Well said Jenifer. There's nothing wrong with enjoying earthly pleasures, however some seem to believe that if they pray for it, they should get it. The more we walk with God in our hearts, the more our desires and needs change and we realize more of His Will. Thank you for the post!

  2. Thank you for this blog. We need to be reminded that our desires should line up with God's. That doesn't mean He won't give us some of the things we desire but as we grow in the Lord our desires change to more Godly desires. Thank you.

  3. Love this, I want to desire what God desires

  4. Love your post today.. "our desires become His desires. When we put our focus completely on God we want what He wants." So true and I just prayed this during my quiet time. I pray that God will lay his heart on mine and burden it the way His is burdened. That His desires of his heart will also be the desires of mine. Great reminder. I also wrote on something similar today...wonderful if God is showing us both something today!! ;)

  5. "When our desires become anything less, we should examine what we are really delighting in." Wow! That's really something to think about. I want my delight to be in God, nothing else. Thanks for this challenge.

  6. Thank you! I'm all for positivity but some people use this verse without thinking about the truth that you so clearly laid out.

Some of my most memorable times with my daughter have been times we've wanted to do something fun but couldn't afford it, so wound up doing something crazy instead.

    Thanks, enjoyed reading this.

  7. That's one of my favorite verses Jennifer! I agree it's often taken out context. In fact, when I first became a Christian I never could understand why people said "Oh, pray about it... God will give YOU the desires of YOUR heart," but then whatever it was wouldn't happen and I'd be discouraged. That's really dangerous for a new believer! This is one of the first things I ever wrote about on our blog too because I was overjoyed about realizing the missing piece of that well-meaning encouragement.

Interestingly, my husband and I were just discussing this verse over the weekend too and it truly is a relationship issue, the deeper the relationship with God the more we want to obey and the more we obey the more our desires become His desires. It makes complete sense really. God is so wise and so good in every way!

  8. I've been thinking about this lately too. We recently bought a really nice (=expensive) camera with a nice zoom lens. We want to start a family soon...and because of that, we want to remember "life before baby" with nice pictures. that was our "logic"...I think we missed the point. Oh and we tried to see our lives in a Christ-centered manner. I missed the idea that I could still have special memories with my husband without high-quality pictures. God wants us to delight in him, and what he's given us...not adorning ourselves with things of this world. What a great insight. Thanks for sharing.

  9. This is so true. Our priorities change to reflect His priorities, and he softens our hearts for the things that touch His.

Also, God knows us better than we know ourselves, and our own desires can change daily, hourly even!

  10. @ Brittany, I am like you, a camera crazed woman. :) I love taking pictures of everything around me, especially my children. I would really like to have a new camera and told my husband this recently. I found myself spending time focusing on what amazing pictures I could take with a new camera and not on the things God wanted me to focus on. Taking pictures and creating those memories are good, but as you said, I can have those memories without a fancy camera. I need to have God's desires.

Thank you all for stopping by! I love reading your comments and I am praying for each of you.

    Sweet Blessings!

  11. Very well put! I think that when we are living our lives in such a way that we are finding great delight in the Lord every day, He puts His desires in our hearts. So no longer are our desires looking for fulfillment, because it's His desires that are there, not ours. I am finding that to be true more and more every day.
    Hugs, cindy

  12. I love this blog post. This is also one of my favorite verses because I sincerely desire for my heart to desire that which pleases God!

  13. God's desires becoming our desires is the key but I also think it can be one of the hardest parts of the whole verse. Thank you for sharing this. It's something that I needed to be reminded of lately.

  14. I love how we can read a particular verse over and over and then suddenly, one day, God reveals something new in that very verse. He is always on time and I am so thankful for that! Thank you for posting.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts, I love hearing from you.
