Watch What You Say!

There is a saying that I always thought was a little cute and even funny.  But recently I am learning it is so true.  It says:

Lord, keep Your arm around my shoulder and Your hand over my mouth!

Our words can hurt.  They can make or break someone.  The Word tells us over and over how the tongue is poison and can be death.

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.  Proverbs 18:21

But no human being can tame the tongue.  It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  James 3:8

The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.  Proverbs 15:4

We should always desire for our words to be uplifting and encouraging.  Are your words speaking life or are you trying to judge that person?  Are your words from the Scriptures or are you adding your two cents?

Watch what you say.  Watch what you post.  Watch what you text. While our attitude and tone of voice are very important, our words can still hurt.

Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God.  God is in Heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.  Ecclesiastes 5:2

Father, please let my words be few.  When I need to speak, let my words speak life.  Amen.

Sweet Blessings~

  1. Truer words were never spoken!
Words can heal and they can cut deeply, as I have found in my life. I pray every day that my words will be acceptable in God's sight. But I often have to ask forgiveness when I realize that my words were not acceptable in God's sight or anyone elses.
    Great thought.

  2. Hi Jenifer - I tend to get into trouble with my words so I've swung to the other side of the pendulum in that I try to keep quiet. Somewhere out there is the balance!
    Great post
    God bless

  3. Great post, Jenifer! Our words have great power and too often they are used to criticize and tear down. We should choose to speak life and blessings, not curses.

  5. I love that verse in Ecclesiastes. Two parts of it always come to mind when I'm talking... "don't be hasty" and "let your words be few." Quite the opposite of what my flesh wants me to do, but His Word helps me mind my mouth :)

  6. Jenifer, "let my words be few". I wonder how my speech would change if I thought of every word as an offering and a gift? Then I would give my very best and choicest to my family, friends and community. Thanks for this thought-provoking post!

btw - I followed you on GFC and NB while I was here. :)

  9. I have opened my mouth way too many times in the past...I've learned the hard way to be quick to listen and slow to speak. My hubby found this out a very hard way last week....

  10. Amen Jenifer... Great reminder.

Far too often we "open our mouths before engaging our brains" and the results can be terrible.

And I love the image of God with his hand covering my mouth... lol

    Have a Blessed Day!
