Does Jesus Need To Clear Your Temple?

"After this He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples. There they stayed for a few days.  When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.  So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.  To those who sold doves He said, 'Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a market!'” John 2:12-16

We have all likely read the story about Jesus clearing the temple of the money changers.  Normally I read this story and think, okay I am not making His house a market.  But today it really stuck out to me.  We may not be selling cattle and exchanging money in the church each Sunday, but are we turning His House into something it shouldn't be?

Is church all about showing off our musical abilities?  Is it about showing off our great fashion sense or newest outfit?  Is it about bragging about all the ways we "blessed" others that week?  Or is about worshiping the Living God?

I never want God to have to clear out the temple because I am making it something it shouldn't be.

It makes me think of a song:

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You
All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
All about You, Jesus

Church should be about worshiping God, learning about what God laid on the minister's heart to share and fellowshiping for encouragement.  Never about our new outfit, latest gadget, beautiful voice or to brag on our good deeds.  Father, forgive me for the times I have made it about me and not about You.

Does Jesus need to clear your temple because of you?

Sweet Blessings~

  2. Jenifer,

It about worshipping Jesus and honoring Him and not about putting ourselves on display. Definitely words to think about.

    Blessings to you Jenifer.
