Sermons We See

Today I would like to share part of the message given in our Kidz Klub this past Sunday.  This really hit me.

"Charles Spurgeon is considered to be one of the greatest preachers who ever lived. In fact, he is sometimes called the "Prince Among Preachers." Even though Spurgeon died over a hundred years ago, people still read his sermons to this day. According to a story I read, Spurgeon and his wife owned chickens and would sell the eggs their chickens laid. They refused to give the eggs away. Even close relatives were expected to pay for any eggs which they got from the Spurgeons. As a result, some people thought the Spurgeons were selfish and greedy.  The Spurgeons accepted this criticism without defending themselves, and only after Mrs. Spurgeon died was the full story revealed. The Spurgeons never spent one penny of that egg money on themselves. Every penny that the Spurgeons made from the sale of their eggs went to support two elderly widows. Even though he never even mentioned it from the pulpit, that story may have been one of the greatest sermons Spurgeon ever preached."

Charles Spurgeon did not just get up and preach to others do this, do that.  He was living it!  Now don't think, "I'm not a pastor so this doesn't apply to me!"  How many times have we given advice or prayed one way but we act the opposite?  We teach our kids to keep their cool and not get angry, then someone cuts us off while driving and we get angry.  We give advice to our friend that she should pray for her husband daily, yet we haven't prayed for our husband for months.

I want to see sermons lived out and I want to live out sermons for others.  I want people to look at my life and see Christ in me.  Friends, we need to be the sermon others see!

Sweet Blessings~

  1. Thank you for a great sermon. I too want people to see Christ in me. The only way for this to happen is to live the godly life. We should never say one thing and then do another. Thanks for sharing. By the way, happy birthday, sweet one. Love you. Blessings to you.

  2. I love it when God uses children's church messages to touch adults! So many people say that children's church isn't real church but as a children's pastor...I beg to differ!

I'm glad that you were touched by the sermon. I really wanted to preach that one, but God hasn't seen fit to return my voice. I'm thankful that Jeremy was able to do it.

    Happpy Birthday! Love ya!

  4. Hi,
I love Charles Spurgeon! I get his daily devotion titled Faith's Checkbook and I love it. It is fairly short but rich with treasures. Thankyou for sharing the egg story. I had never heard it. It made me think of a quote I heard once, . "Be careful how you live your life, You are the only Bible that the lost world may ever read." . I enjoyed reading your blog today.

  6. Definitely something to think about. We are quick to dish out advice and wise words to others but are we living them ourselves. We need to walk the walk. Thanks!

  7. This really struck me, Jenifer! Thanks so much for sharing. ;) They could have defended themselves very easily but the chose not to do so. So touching and many lessons can be learned from this.

    God bless!

  8. What a great story, I love Spurgeon! What a humble, godly man. I am definitely convicted, I do get on to my children for doing some of the very things that they have learned from ME! Thank you, great thoughts and encouragement as usual.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO :)I hope it's blessed in every way my friend!

  10. I love that story! That is an example of how we all should live our lives. Our pastor said on Sunday how we are all pastors because others are watching how we live our lives!

  13. I'm not really a blogger, but I stumbled across yours and just love it! I wanted to thank you for your challenging, yet encouraging posts. Life is so much better when our focus is upward and not inward; I love how that is the focus here!
