A Wednesday Wander - Nuggets From God

Today let's wander over to Nuggets from God with Debi (my mama!).  Please stop by her blog and give her some love!

Author of Nuggets from God, Debi Baker, is a woman after the heart of God.  She is a children's pastor in her church and a blogger.  Debi has been married to her husband, Jim, for thirty-four years and they have four adult children (and three children-in-law) and eight grandchildren.  On a sunny day, you can find her riding behind her husband on their Gold Wing motorcycle enjoying God's creation in a new and different way.

Just a quick 'thank you' to Jenifer for allowing me to guest post on her blog today. I appreciate the opportunity to share what God has laid on my heart with your readers.

I get laryngitis every year, well, except for last year...I have had it every year for at least the last 15 years! Now, this isn't just laryngitis...when I get this, I don't speak for sometimes up to 10 weeks! That's a L - O - N - G time, especially for a children's pastor. I am fortunate, however. Jenifer's husband, my son-in-law, whom I love dearly and consider as a son and not a son-in-law, is one of my partners in ministry. While he doesn't work in Kidz Klub on a regular basis, he is always there when I need him. And, for 4 weeks now, he has had to step up to the plate and preach and run our services. Thank you, Jeremy!

Last Sunday, he was preaching to the kids about the incomprehensibility of God. Wow, that's a long word. The definition of incomprehensible is: impossible to understand or comprehend; unintelligible; limitless; not limited or capable of being limited. Ok, we all know that God is limitless. We all know that it's not for us to understand His ways. But, as Jeremy was preaching this message something really hit me! He was reading the Scripture - Isaiah  40:12-31 - and verse 15 says, "15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust." When he finished reading the text, he took an eye dropper and a large glass. He dropped one drop of water into the glass. Now, one drop of water in a large glass is really like NO water in the glass. It really doesn't even get the bottom of the glass wet! He explained to the kids that God is like the water (not the drop, but the whole of water) and we are like the glass. He said that God is so big and so powerful and so loving and we humans only use a drop of what God has to offer! Think about it...if we would use all the power that God has; if we would love with all the love that God has...my, oh, my...what could we accomplish for the Kingdom? Think about it like this...if you were in the desert and were dying of thirst...a 'drop' of water might be a welcome thing BUT how much more would you welcome an entire glass of water? That's how it is with God...we do ok with a drop of Him here and there BUT how much greater would we be if we had more than just a drop or two?

That demonstration affected me so much. I had never thought of it like that, but it is so true...we say we love with a Godly love, but do we really? We say that we have the power of God, but do we...when was the last time you saw someone healed of anything? We say that we know God is big, but do we really know how big He is? No...we can imagine...but we cannot possibly know how big He really is. The word was incomprehensible. It's a big word...it was a tough sermon to preach...yet, it affected me greatly.

God is all-powerful and so much bigger than we are! We are just a drop in the proverbial bucket. With God we can be and do so much more than we can alone. If we would only tap in to the greatness of God. If we would only 'fill up' our glass with Him and all that He is. The last verse of the chapter is so refreshing and uplifting: "31But those who trust the LORD will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired."

I hope that you have been touched by this as I was. Think on the incomprehensibility of God...tap into a part of Him that until now you have only imagined. Let's do something major for the Kingdom.

Walking the walk, talking the talk!

  1. Jenifer, you had a wonderful guest today.
Debi, this was an amazing topic. You have set my mind into gear. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all did exactly what Jeremy said and you, tap into all that God has. A children's pastor has their work cut out for them, the parents and the children's pastor has to make sure they know what they are talking about and also make sure the kids understand what they are saying, no if's and but's about it. It is wonderful to see some of the work the children's pastor goes through. I have always said an adult needs to set in on a children's church to hear the message and see what is going on. Thanks for sharing this. Blessings to you.

  3. What a great illustration! God is so amazing, so loving, so powerful, and yet we only understand such a small part of Him. Why are we content with just a drop when He longs to give us the whole glass? Great post, thanks Debi & Jenifer!

  4. What a wonderful demonstration and lesson for the children! I find quite a bit to inspire me in Isaiah, and that example fits beautifully with the verse. Thank you for sharing that with us!

    Have a Blessed Day!

  5. What a great analogy with the water! I am so visual, those things really help me wrap my brain around things! I really liked this "God is so big and so powerful and so loving and we humans only use a drop of what God has to offer." So true. I need to tap into the fullness of His power He freely gives to me!:)
