This weekend all across the Midwest we had a winter storm. Temperatures below zero in some areas and snow accumulation. Many businesses were closed and many churches cancelled services or opted for online only services. My husband and I spent the days relaxing. We watched some of our favorite TV shows and movies, he worked on a model, I worked on a puzzle, we cooked, we napped. For this homebody, it was so nice. As much as I love being home and being with my husband, I don't like the idea that I can't leave if I wanted to. As I watched the snow fall and wondered how long this would last, I remembered that it won't last forever. There is a time for everything. A time for the winter cold and snow, but right around the corner is spring. A time for us to mourn losses and grieve in pain, and a time to rejoice and dance. Just like the snow and -5° is temporary, so is our pain and chaos.

We are taught to be independent and strong. We are taught to make it on our own. But the truth is, that just gets us into trouble! We aren't meant to be independent; we are meant to depend on God. In fact, Proverbs tells us to not rely on our own but to trust in God. On our own, we will go down some crooked paths that lead to destruction. Sometimes the path may seem straight, but eventually destruction appears. God's path, even when it seems a little bumpy at times, will always be straight.

Gratitude truly changes everything. When we show thanksgiving to God, our priorities change, our mindset shifts, out outlook changes, our contentment increases, and our happiness grows. The more gratitude we express, the better life can feel,

A new year is a wonderful blessing from God. A fresh start. A clean slate. A new beginning. But the truth is, God's mercies are new every single day. We don't have to wait for a new calendar to begin new. We simply need to surrender to Him and receive that fresh start immediately. That is something to be thankful for!
