Too often we get our minds fixated on our problems and we lose sight of the blessings. Even when things aren't going great, even when problems and chaos are around, there is still reason to praise God. You have a co-worker that is hard to deal with; praise God you have a job and an opportunity to show the love of God to this co-worker. You have to take sick kids to the doctor; praise God you have health insurance. Through every thing we face, through every circumstance that comes our way, we can always find reason to praise God.

THERE IS GOOD IN EVERY DAY

When my grandfather passed away on Christmas morning, my world shattered. I still, one day short of three months later, feel very broken. There has still not been a day that I haven’t broken down and cried. With all that is going on in the world right now, I just have this deep, urgent need to talk to him. To hug him. Yet, I can’t.

About two weeks after we lost Papa, I remember walking through my house feeling like every single day has been horrible since losing him. That nothing felt right, nothing was going right, there was just nothing good. While walking into my dining room feeling this awful burden, I walked past my letter board. The quote that had been on my board for probably six months, maybe more, is one of my favorites. I kept thinking I needed to change it but just never did. Now I know why.

Every day may not be good, but there is good in every day.

Every day may not be full of good. It may not be considered a good day. It may be a really hard day even. But, each day does have something good in it.

As a tear slid down my check, I went to my bookshelf and picked up a brand new journal that I hadn’t been sure what to use it for. I wrote the quote in the front cover and dedicated it to my Papa. Then. I wrote three things in that day that were good. Now I keep the journal by my bedside and at the end of the day I think back and find three things that were good. Some days it’s easy to find three things. Some days I struggle. But they are always there, we just have to dig.

This practice has been a blessing to me, especially on the bad days. It makes me pause and think. It makes me reflect. It makes me realize there is still something good. And it makes me thankful.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.
Psalm 107:1

This world is going through a very difficult time. Things I never, ever thought I would see happen are happening. Like schools closed, lack of food and supplies, churches only able to have online services, and being told we can’t leave our homes. It feels like a movie, not real life.

If you are struggling, whether from the pandemic going on, the loss of a loved one, dealing with a health crisis, a broken relationship, or any other struggle, I challenge you to begin to find the good. Find the little blessings. Some days it may just be that you woke up or that you heard a bird chirping. Whatever it is, find it. Write it down and reflect on God’s goodness. It may not change your situation but it will put your focus on God and remind you that every day may not be good, but there is good in every day.

FINDING THE BLESSING FROM THE MESS

This morning I woke up after only 5 hours of sleep. 5 very restless hours. I am exhausted. Dark circles and bags under my eyes, body sore, I feel like I could fall asleep and sleep for days. Yet I make my way through the house to begin my day. My bedroom has a large pile of dirty clothes that need to be washed sitting on the floor and a large pile of clean clothes on the dresser that I need to fold and put away. I walk into the kitchen and see a sink full of dirty dishes and a dishwasher full of more dirty dishes. I go to start the dishwasher, thinking I'll tackle the sink later, yet I find that I am out of dish soap. I look at my kitchen. Cups everywhere, a gallon of sweet tea left out of the icebox, crumbs on the table and a trashcan so full the lid is hanging off. I groan. My house was spotless just 2 days ago! Then I walk through the dining room and see 2 bags sitting there from our Independence Day celebrations. I know those bags hold many items that need to be washed and put away. Then I enter the living room. This room isn't too bad. Mostly it just needs to be dusted and vacuumed. But I think of all this that needs to be done and I think of how insanely tired I am. I begin to have feelings of anger, sadness, I am not really sure what you'd call these feelings. But they are not joyful, grateful feelings.

Then I feel God prick my heart. He reminded me of my yesterday. Of getting to sleep in with my husband by my side. Of having a day with my grandparents, parents, siblings and their crews, my husband and my kids. Of hearing the laughter and splashes of my kids and nieces and nephews swimming. Of eating my favorite summer foods, fried green tomatoes, watermelon, and homemade ice cream. Of coming home for an afternoon nap before our evening events started. Of watching fireworks with friends. Of watching my 4 teenagers sit on a blanket on the grass talking and laughing. My heart goes from bitterness of these messes and my tired eyes to full of the great blessings He has given me.

Those piles of dirty clothes, that sink full of dishes and bags of things to be put away are all reminders that our family had a great holiday. That we were blessed. Sometimes we need to step back from the mess and see the blessing. A sink full of dishes is a reminder that we have been blessed with food. Think of all those who are starving, not hungry but literally starving. Those wet towels and bathing suits are reminders of fun and laughter. The late night is a reminder that we celebrated with family and friends. It is hard to grumble and complain when we are busy counting our blessings.

Today I challenge you to step away from the mess and look at it. Really look at it. What blessing is that mess showing you?

Christmas Blessing Giveaway 2013

Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love all of the lights, decorations, music, talking about the birth of my Daddy God and the memories made. I have so many fond memories of Christmas. Growing up we went to Grandpa and Grandma's (my dad's folks) for Christmas Eve. With such a large family there was always at least 40 people there. The house was packed, yet there was much laughter. Then on Christmas morning, Dad and Mom always made the morning so special for us. We had a slow and easy morning at home, just being with one another. We'd have mom's homemade oatmeal and m&m cookies for breakfast (yes for breakfast, it was a Christmas treat!). Then we'd head over to Papa and Mamaw's (my mom's folks) for Christmas dinner. There was so much love to be shared and beautiful memories. I will never forget those Christmases growing up. Each one so special.

Another fond memory I hold dear is of just a few years ago. My Mamaw, Mama, sister and niece and nephew came over to my home for a day of Christmas baking. Each person brought the ingredients for whatever treats they wanted to make. We listened to Christmas carols, had lunch together and spend the entire day baking. It was a beautiful time that my children and I will remember forever.

Announcements!

So many wonderful things going on and I just have to share!  I feel like singing that song...I'm so excited!  And I just can't hide it!   

This coming Monday, May 6th, we have an incredible, ginormous, beautiful giveaway going on for Mother's Day!  It's the Mother's Day Blessing hosted by Woman to Woman.  We have teamed up with some wonderful bloggers to bring you this amazing giveaway.  So be sure to check back on Monday to enter!  And I will let you in on a little secret, there is a special surprise for everyone!  But shhh!

Secondly, I was contacted a couple of months ago but a precious lady.  She asked me to be a contributor for a homeschool blog.  My first two thoughts were:  Ha!  I so do not have the time.  And: Are you kidding me?  I just had a huge fight with my son about doing his school work!  But God immediately begin to work in my heart.  The more excuses I made for saying no, the more I felt God telling me to say yes.

I feel extremely blessed to be able to homeschool my children. My husband and I have made sacrifices -financially- so that I can stay home and I count it a privilege and honor.  Does that mean I am great at it?  No, not really.  Does that mean our days are perfect?  Um, no.  Does that mean I have mastered homeschooling?  And again I say: Ha!  While our days are far from perfection, my sons despise reading, and my daughter is behind in algebra (I hate algebra just so you know), I am so blessed to homeschool.  I am learning along the way.  Each new year brings new challenges and new adventures.  I praise God for this opportunity to homeschool my four children.

I am greatly looking forward to working with Hilary and the Homeschool Toolbox team.  Each month I will post on different aspects of homeschooling from family devotions to fun family days.

So there you have it!  All my big news for the day!
