MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOURS

School is officially back in full swing!

Your kiddos are gone for roughly eight hours of the day for school and sleep another eight or so hours. That leaves only eight hours, at most, to spend with them. In my case, we homeschooled our children so while we are together all day, we are not necessarily together because we are still working.

Let's look at that eight hours left in the day. And remember that the eight hours is being generous because most kids sleep more than eight hours. Within that eight or so hours is homework, dinner, showers, chores, preparing for the next day of school, etc. So let's take that eight hours down to about five. Again, being generous as sometimes that homework can take a long time.

Five hours. Five hours to be with your children each day. That is all.

Make the most of your hours. #family #parenting #motherhood

That is not figuring in sports, music lessons, etc. On the nights your children have activities, your five hours is drastically cut down.

What do you do with that five hours? Is the tv on? Is everyone off in their own world of cell phones, iPads, gaming systems, and computers? What are you doing during these short hours to connect with your children? What are you doing to invest in their life? If you homeschool or choose online school enrollment, you will have more time with your children every day and get to watch them grow.

It can be so easy at the end of a long day to unwind in front of the tv. It can be so easy to catch up on social media and share about our day with the world around  us. But what about those precious faces right there in your home?

A number of years ago when our kids were still young, I bought a 1000 piece puzzle. We hadn't done a puzzle in a little awhile and I wanted an activity that required us working together. We sat down that evening and worked together on this puzzle. For the next two weeks, each evening after dinner we would sit down and work together. We would laugh and joke, share stories of our day, and tease each other. The tv was off, computers were off, cell phones we in the other room. It was just the family connecting as one. And it was beautiful. My husband and I looked forward to that time as a family all day. I cherish that time and the memories.

One day you will look around and our children will be grown, it will happen, believe me. The house will be silent. You will wonder where the time went. You will think back on those memories filed away. What will your memories be of? Laughing over a board game? Working a puzzle together? After dinner walks with the family? Or everyone off doing their own thing? Everyone quiet because someone had to see a tv show?

You only have a few hours a day to be a family. Don't waste it.

THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING

When our oldest was old enough for kindergarten, we knew exactly where we wanted her to attend. This public school was exactly what we envisioned and it was a wonderful experience. The following year, when she would enter the first grade, my husband and I were children's pastors at a church that also had a private Christian school. We were blessed that our kids were able to attend this school at no charge to us. The Christian school was, again, a wonderful experience.

Two years later, my husband and I stepped down as church staff and moved to a new church. This meant our children were no longer able to attend the Christian school without a very large chunk of money. Unfortunately, with three now in school, we just could not keep them in financially.

We decided to enroll our children in the public school by our house. It was horrible.

Here are just a few things we experienced:
- Teachers showing up to school to teach in pajamas.
- We were one of only five sets of parents in the entire school to show up for parent/teacher night.
- I tried to meet the principal on five different occasions, she always refused to come out of her office and meet me, nor did she return my phone calls.
- My daughter's third grade teacher had her cigarettes on her desk, in view and reach of the children.
- On one of my visits to the office to speak with the principal, a man who had never been to the school walked in and said he was there to pick up a friend's daughter. They told him to go on down to her classroom and get her. They never verified with the parent, never checked for notes from home, never even asked the child if she knew the man.

After only six weeks, my husband and I knew we could not continue. We pulled our kids to homeschool them. We were met with the office staff laughing at us and telling us how stupid that was and that we would be back. We never went back.

Homeschooling our kids was the best decision we could have made!

Homeschooling wasn't always easy. In fact, there were many days I thought I had lost my mind. There were many days I thought I was underqualified or incapable of teaching my children. But my husband and I always came back to one thing: God qualified us to teach our children when He gave them to us.

All four of my children have all graduated from homeschooling now. As I look back, the days weren't always easy or perfect. But they were always good. Homeschooling them was a blessing, a gift from God.

As I look at the schools now, I would make the same decision, only I would have made it faster! Our children are our gift from God. He calls us to take care of them and to protect them. When I look at all that is happening in our school system today, it breaks my heart.

Kirk Cameron has a brand new movie all about homeschooling. Families across the nation are experiencing the homeschool awakening, taking advantage of the freedom and opportunities for self-discovery -- with the world as their classroom. Kirk dives into the adventures of dynamic American families on a mission to put fun and faith back into learning. The Homeschool Awakening explores the ins, outs, and honest answers to homeschooling’s most frequently asked questions.

The Homeschool Awakening is in theaters today (6/13) and tomorrow (6/14) only. To find a theater in your area, click HERE.

Whether you already homeschool your children, you are considering dipping your toes in to give it a try, or you are completely against homeschooling, this movie is for you! Don't miss The Homeschool Awakening!

TIPS FOR THE NEW HOMESCHOOL FAMILY

Things are a little crazy in our world right now. Stores are being shut down, grocery shelves are empty, we have a gathering limit, and now schools are shut down. In my city, schools have shut down for the remainder of the year. Children must now stay home and be homeschooled. Our education system is working on the best possible plan for this impossible situation.

For some of us, like my family, homeschool is nothing new. We have been homeschooling for fourteen years. If you have suddenly found yourself a homeschool family, I'd like to share a few tips that have helped me throughout the years.

Get up and get ready. I know that it is so very easy to sleep in and stay in pajamas all day long. But I also know that once you are able to get out of the house and back to normal, it is much harder to break that habit than it was to create it. So set your alarm and this is also a great time to teach your kids how to set their own alarm clock and wake up to it! Get up at a normal hour, whether that is 6am for your family or 8am, just get up at a decent hour. Everyone get teeth brushed, dressed, the whole bit. You will feel better and be more productive if you are fully ready and you will not have to worry about breaking any bad habits later on.

Do chores. Mornings before school, when you leave the house, can be very hectic and rushed. For a lot of families that means chores do not get done. Give each person a chore that needs to be done before breakfast. It can be making their own bed and picking up their own room or feeding a pet or emptying the dishwasher, one quick chore before breakfast helps the house to stay picked up a little better and teaches responsibility. It is also good to set an afternoon chore or afternoon pickup time. When my kids were little they had a chore to be completed before breakfast, then in the afternoon we did a "ten count cleanup." Everyone had to walk through the house and clean up ten things. This was a huge help in keeping the house together. While chores are a normal part of the family dynamic, everyone needs to pitch in and help, they are also part of school. Chores teach life skills.

Limit tv. During time at home it is easy to catch up on your tv shows or just relax and watch some tv. This is another habit that can be hard to break. Consider allowing just one show during the day. My kids were allowed to each choose one show to watch or to work together and choose one movie for the day.

Have a routine. Having a routine is so important. If you don't have a routine, important things can be forgotten. Plus, kids have a routine at school so why not at home? Have a time to get up and ready, a time for chores, a time for meals, a time for school work, a quiet time, add whatever fits your family, just have a routine. Also, make sure they are still going to bed at their regular bed time. While a routine is important, so is flexibility. Sometimes our routines need to be adjusted a little.

Have a quiet time. No, your kids don't get a quiet time at school but when at home it can be a huge help to you! For one hour, or whatever fits your family, everyone goes into their own room and does something quiet. My daughters always wanted to read and my sons always wanted to play with hotwheels racing them on their pillows. When they were younger, they often fell asleep. This is another great time to use the alarm clock. Tell them they must stay in their room until the alarm goes off. This quiet time allows you to work, if you are working from home, catch up on laundry, start dinner, or whatever else you need to do without distraction.

Limit snacks. Kids at home like to snack! Oh my word! They are asking for a snack while you're still cleaning up breakfast. An hour later they want to know what is for lunch, and it continues all day long. One way to combat the constant asking and snacking is to get a basket for each child in the home. In the morning, or the night before, put a couple items in each basket. For example, each basket gets an apple, a bag of fruit chews, a cookie, and a cup (this way they only use one cup in the day and not ten). Whatever is in their basket, they can eat. When their snacks are gone, they are done. They will quickly learn to ration themselves so they have snacks all day, and if they don't, that is their fault.

For school work, find what works best for your family. When we first started homeschooling I got a school desk and chair for each child. We had a room that was our schoolroom, nothing happened in this room except school. With a bookshelf, the American Flag, and tons of school supplies, I was thrilled. After a couple of years I realized that my kids, especially my boys, actually worked better at the kitchen table. So we did away with our school desks and used the room for something else. It may take a week or two to figure out what works best for your children. If you have a space that can be just for school, give it a try! You can also try the kitchen table, or even the couch. That is the beauty of homeschool.

Be creative. When cooking, have your kids help you. They are learning a life skill, they are learning science, and they are learning math. When grocery ads come, have your kids compare prices. Have older kids help younger kids with school work. There are so many ways to be creative with learning.

Have P.E. While at home, don't skip P.E. Actually, this may be when they need it most! Weather permitting, schedule outside time every day. They can play in the yard or ride bikes in the driveway. When weather doesn't permit, if you have space, do P.E. inside. It can even be aerobics. It will be so good for them and help get any energy out.

Do what you can, get help when you can't. Throughout our elementary years, I was fine teaching my kids. Middle school wasn't bad either. But high school. Ugh. High school math has nearly killed me. When my kids started high school, we transitioned from traditional homeschool to virtual homeschool. At first I was heartbroken, thinking I had failed them. But I soon realized that I wasn't failing them, but helping them. Why struggle to teach them what I can't. Teach your kids what you can, get help when you can't. Their school teacher may be willing to do a facetime with you guys or find a friend or family member who knows the subject and ask for help. This is a great way to trade with another mother. Maybe you are really good at science but struggle in history and another mom is great with history but struggles with science. Facetime each other to help each other out.

Forgive. You are facing a new adventure. It won't always be easy, but you can do this. When you fail, forgive yourself and get back at it. If you wrong your kids, ask forgiveness and move forward. When your kids fail, forgive them and move on. Don't stress yourself out.

I promise, you will get through this. We will all get through this crisis. Let's trust God, be wise, and stay calm.

If you are a veteran homeschool parent, what other tips would you add? Please share in the comments!

LIKE ARROWS {GIVEAWAY}

My babies aren't babies anymore. My oldest is already twenty and my youngest fifteen. People say don't blink because it goes by so fast, they couldn't be more correct. The years have flown by. With my oldest away at college, I often think over the twenty years of raising her and her siblings. Was there anything I missed in teaching them? Where did I lack? Did I mess anything up? Did I say anything that deeply hurt them? I pray to God to fill in any gaps I left, I thank Him for grace, and I praise Him that it is never too late.

Family Life has a new movie, Like Arrows, all about raising children and the legacy we leave them.

When conflict, rebellion, and resentment overwhelm their family, Charlie and Alice are forced to rethink their parenting strategy. In the process, they realize how critical intentionality and focus are when shaping and molding young lives. Family Life’s first feature film explores the challenges and joys that come with raising children. Through a journey that unfolds over 50 years, Charlie and Alice discover the unmistakable power of family. Together, they learn that knowing and living by God’s Word is what brings transformation and hope to any family.

Like Arrows encouraged, inspired, convicted, and challenged me in my parenting. As Charlie and Alice go through the years of parenthood, you will see yourself at some point. It may be their highs, it may be their lows, but it will likely be a good mix of both. You will end the movie challenged and ready to make a change for the better.

Whether you are thinking of having children, have little ones, have school aged kids, have teens, have adult children, or have grandchildren, this movie is a must see. It will change your life and your legacy in the best possible way.

Here is Matt Hammitt's new song Like Arrows:

I encourage you to check out the 8 day YouVersion Bible reading plan and study for Like Arrows. From the YouVersion app, search Like Arrows or click HERE.

**********

As the mom of two girls, aunt of three girls, and children's pastor of many more, I deeply desire for young girls to have positive, Biblical role models. When this world throws so many expectations at our girls on how to look and act, I want girls to know Truth.

Erin Weidemanns has this same passion and has done something incredible with it. Erin created Bible Belles.
Bible Belles is a series based on five superhero women of the Bible: Hannah, EstherAbigail, Ruth, and Deborah. HEARD. These women were extraordinary because they made a different kind of noise than the noise of today’s world. Today, the girls who are loud, rude, and obsessed with outer beauty are the ones a lot of girls look up to and try to act like. The Bible Belles series is a new way for girls to celebrate the qualities that make up a truly beautiful woman: prayer, patience, bravery, loyalty, and leadership. These five women represent the journey a young girl can take to understand God’s love and to be someone whose beauty isn’t measured by society’s standards. They symbolize the transformation of a girl who learns to see true beauty in herself and in others.

Each book has Rooney, being led by her angel Mari, to meet a new hero of the Bible. Rooney learns incredible lessons such as prayer, patience, bravery, loyalty, and leadership. The final book in the HEARD series, Deborah the Belle of Leadership, just released.

In this world where we are told with words to be leaders, yet encouraged by actions to be followers, Deborah teaches Rooney, and your girl, that true leadership is inspiring others and working hard together.

Each Bible Belle book sells for $14.99, or you can get the 5 HEARD book bundle for only $59.95. This is basically getting a book free! Click HERE for the book bundle. PLUS, Bible Belles has partnered with World Vision and for every book you purchase, a book will be given to a girl in an under-resourced area. Now, not only will your girl be blessed and taught about a female Biblical hero, but a girl who may never hear will now have the chance.

Bible Belles also has devotionals, accessories, and birthday party bundles for your girl. Purchase Bible Belles for your girl and help her become a true hero. To purchase the books, click each name here or the banner below.

HANDLING A REBELLIOUS CHILD

Handling a rebellious child is hard, heart breaking work. You wonder what you did wrong. Should you have spanked more, should you not have spanked at all. Should you have chosen a different schooling option. Should you have had stricter rules or lightened up a bit. You feel responsible. You feel angry. You feel tired. You hurt. You feel like a failure.

There are different types of rebellion. Maybe your child has an addiction that is physically harming them, maybe they lie constantly, maybe they are angry, maybe they disrespect everything you do and say. No matter what form of rebellion, there is an ongoing cycle that continues week after week, day after day. You talk, discipline, punish, talk more, get angry, cry, talk again, worry, seek advice and talk even more.

Let me ask you this: when is the last time you prayed?

I am not talking a quick, simple "Help me, Lord!" prayer, though those prayers are often needed. I am not talking tear filled prayers telling God you just can't do it anymore, though we feel this way. I am talking about clasping hands with your spouse and going to the throne room of God for your child.

You see, rebellion is a heart problem. All of the talks and punishments are not going to change that. Yes, they are most definitely needed. Any form of rebellion cannot go unpunished. But the only thing that is going to change it is a heart change. And the only way you are going to see a heart change is through prayer. Fervent, intentional prayer.

Friends, I know how hard this is. Believe me, I do. It's time to take it to God. To petition the King of kings on behalf of your child. We must be in prayer over all of our children on a daily basis. But when we have a child with a rebellious heart, we must go to the next level with prayer. The kind of prayer that is a fight for your child's life. Think of it this way, if you are not fighting for your child, who is?

Another thing we must do is remind the enemy that he has no control of your child and to kick him out of your family's life and home. This very real enemy we have thinks that he can take up residence in your home and when he does, he whispers lies to your family and wreak havoc. He needs to be reminded that he is not welcome and must leave. I love this scene from the movie War Room. You can feel the power as Elizabeth, played by Priscilla Shirer, tells the enemy to leave. People, this is what we must do! You have this authority! Use it!

I encourage you, if your child has a rebellious heart, it's time to take a stand. Get together with your spouse and, with hands held together in unity, begin to fervently prayer over your child day after day.

If your spouse is not a believer, go to your accountability partner, pastor's wife, your own parent, someone who will gather with you and go to God on behalf of your child. Someone you can trust. If your child isn't the one going through this but someone close to you is, will you stand in the gap? Will you join the parent in prayer?

Prayer changes things. Even a rebellious child. Let's fight for our children.

SHE IS YOURS

As parents we watch our kids learn and grow and change. It's such a beautiful thing to watch. We see their chubby baby legs toddle along as they learn to walk. Then we see those same legs walking into their first day of school. Then those legs walk into their first job. Then the dreaded day comes as they walk into college.

In their new book, She Is Yours, Jonathan and Wynter Pitts pierce my heart when they say,
My third thought was a bit more reflective, and it quickly aroused some anxiety. "My girls are growing so fast physically and emotionally, but are they growing spiritually."
I shared last week how after dropping my oldest off at college, I ran through her life thinking of all the things I taught her in her 19 years. Wondering what I missed, I pray fervently for God to fill in the gaps.

As parents, we strive to make sure our kids know all they need to know. We teach them their numbers and letters, how to sweep a floor and feed the family pet, how to drive a car and how to balance a checkbook. But how often are we teaching them how to pray, study God's Word and live for Him? While we make sure they become safe drivers, are we making sure they become solid Christians?

We need to remember that first and foremost, our children belong to God. He has gifted them to us for a season to teach. If we fail to teach them to live fully and intentionally for God, we fail to do what God has called us to do.

In She Is Yours, Jonathan and Wynter teach us how to lead our children. They share their real life experiences and practical ways to help raise your child in the way of the Lord. Each chapter ends with a prayer, and each prayer ends with "She is Yours, and I trust You with her." Words that are medicine to this mama's heart as I pray for my baby away at school.

While Jonathan and Wynter's book is written about daughters, since they have 4 beautiful daughters, every single thing in this book can be applied to your sons as well. Every parent, whether a parent of all girls, parent of all boys, or parent to boys and girls, should read and reread this book. I read a lot of books and I can honestly say this is one of the best, if not the best, parenting book I've ever read.

Reading She Is Yours is going to make you laugh, cry, but most important, it will change the way you parent forever. Pick up a copy She Is Yours today!

{WHY} MOTHERHOOD MATTERS

It has been almost 2 weeks. 2 weeks since my husband and I dropped our oldest child off at college. I knew it would be hard, yet I never knew how hard. The orientation and hearing them speak about all my child would do and experience without me. Hearing them talk about the college nurse and what to do for an emergency and knowing I wouldn't be there to protect her in those times. Setting up her apartment and knowing she would live there without us. Seeing where she will eat her meals, meals I won't be able to cook for her. Then there was the driving away. And the arriving back at home without her there. Oh it is so hard friends!

The entire drive home I kept running through her 19 years and wondering what have I missed? What did I fail to teach her that she needs to know? What did I miss in praying over her? What gaps did I leave? Will she remember to call on Him?

In her new book {Why} Motherhood Matters, September McCarthy tells us:
I realize I cannot be everything my children need. Unless I give them a daily dose of the living, breathing God in their life, when the day comes that I cannot be there or fix something, they won't know to rely on God first. Even before me. I am going to pray over my children's lives for a deep faith that is rooted in places I cannot reach, and that my faith will be strong enough to know He is enough for my children.

No matter how intentional we are in raising our children and teaching them about the Father, our first duty is to give them that daily dose of God. That means that we have to live for Him. We have to turn to Him, praise Him, serve Him. The second thing we need to do is pray for them.

My daughter is almost 200 miles from home, yet I can still give her a daily dose of God by me living for Him. And I can most definitely pray for her. I can pray that God would fill in the gaps that I left, protect where I cannot, and lead her in all her ways. Even from these long 200 miles away, motherhood matters.

My oldest is now away at school, but I still have 3 at home. Truth is, all 4 of my kids need me in some way. The day we had family over to say good-bye, I realized how deeply I needed my mama and my grandmother. You see, until the day we die, our motherhood will matter.

September's book, {Why} Motherhood Matters, is available today. This book is for moms in all seasons and from all walks. Pick up a copy today and see just why motherhood matters.

PRAYING FOR GIRLS

I remember when I was first pregnant with my oldest. I would lay my hands on my rounded belly praying for her, though I didn't know she was a her yet. I remember driving home from work each day talking to her and praying over her. 19 years later, I am still praying for her, as well as my other babies. Now that my oldest is in the early part of her adulthood journey and preparing for college, I find that my prayers, mixed with buckets of tears, are nonstop.

The prayers of a mother are vitally important. Yet, sometimes, we aren't sure what to pray. I've often wondered if I am missing any areas that need to be prayed over. What did I fail to cover? We wonder how to pray over specific areas and how to pray Scripture over our girl.

In her brand new book Praying for Girls, Teri Lynne Underwood shares 5 main areas to pray over your daughter, each with little sub-areas. She teaches us how to pray over her identity, her heart, her mind, her relationships and her purpose. Teri Lynne uses over 200 Scriptures to show us how to pray God's Word. My favorite part is at the end of each area, she offers a Girl Talk. This Girl Talk is divided into 3 sections. 1 for little girls, 1 for the middle girls, and 1 for big girls. The Girl Talk gives discussion topics for you and your daughter to talk about and gives a little hands on activity to do together. This is a great bonding tool!

No matter how old your girl is, 1 or 21, Praying for Girls is a must read. You will be blessed, your daughter will be blessed and your relationship with her will be blessed.

Have sons? Are you a boy only mom? That's ok! Praying for Girls can work for your boys too! Our sons need prayers in these areas as well and the Girl Talk can be changed to Boy Talk with a little adjustment for the hands on areas.
