APRIL WELLNESS CHALLENGE

This year one of my Powersheets goals is my health. This is actually something that has been a Powersheets goal for me for a couple of years, however, I bounce around with doing great and not doing good at all. In the fall of 2022 I started going to the gym five days a week. I felt stronger and better than ever. I kept up with this habit for an entire year.

Then in November of 2023, I started watching my youngest grandson and the times conflicted with going to the gym so I fell out of the habit. By December, when I set my Powersheets goals, I was ready get back to it. I was determined to make the time work. Except, I found out our gym closed its doors. Just great.

I was still trying to figure out what to do -do I get a membership to another gym, do I workout at home, do I take walks, what do I do- when I started the year very sick. Y'all, by March 5th, I had been sick four different times. So sick I missed church four different times, and I hate missing church. With all the sickness, focusing on my health was hit or miss. I drank water, took my vitamins, and did all those good things. But I was also consuming a lot of sugar and not working out at all, I also never hit my step goal.

Don’t you know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,
whom you have from God? You are not
your own, for you were bought at a
price. So glorify God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 CSB

We are now nearing April and I am ready to work on my overall wellness!

April Wellness Challenge #wellness #health #faith #challenge

Megs from She Lives Loved did 75 Hard last year. A challenge that focuses on overall wellbeing. She is doing the challenge again beginning in April and I asked her about it. When she first sent me the information, my jaw dropped. It is intense! I decided I wanted to give it a try anyway. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that I needed something more tailored to my life and my season. Something with just a little more grace. (If you are looking for a good, strict challenge, follow Megs on Instagram and ask her about 75 Hard!)

I decided to do an April Wellness Challenge and want to invite you to join me!

I want to make this clear, this is not about losing weight. This is not a diet. And I am not a medical professional nor a dietitian. This is simply what I am doing to focus on overall wellness for the month.

So here it is! This is what I am doing for an April Wellness Challenge:

1. A 20 minute walk outside every day. Rain or shine, get outside and walk for at least 20 minutes. It doesn't have to be a powerwalk or intense. It can be a powerwalk, but it can also be a prayer walk, a worship walk, or just a leisurely walk. The idea is to just move, get those steps in, and get fresh air.

2. Drink 100 ounces of water every day. I love using a good tumbler for my water. This 40oz Swig Life Tumbler is my favorite. I also love this 50oz Reduce Tumbler. I need a tumbler that has a handle and straw, and will keep my water cold. Knowing I only need to fill it up twice (or two and a half times if I am using my Swig Life) makes it so easy to get my water in. I fill it up in the morning and again in the afternoon and sip on it all day.

3. Do an off screen activity for 20 minutes every day. This could be reading a book, doing a puzzle, playing a game, gardening, calling a friend, anything off screen. No social media, no TV, no computer, no device games, no texting, no screens! (Bible study doesn't count, we want extra time off screen.)

4. Make healthy choices six days a week. I could say the word diet, but truthfully, I am not a fan of this word. Making healthy choices for our body shouldn't be considered a diet. I suggest choosing one area to focusing on this month. This could be no sugar, no soda, no gluten, hitting a protein goal, just some kind healthy choice for six of the seven days a week. We don't need to do all these things at one time, we just need to do something. I say six days because it is okay to indulge once in a while. For me, I will be doing no ice cream and no soda Saturday through Thursday. I enjoy having a Pepsi on Fridays when I go to the lake, and I enjoy ice cream so I don't want to completely deprive myself. So Fridays will be my treat day (notice I didn't say cheat day, that has a negative feel to me)! In addition to making healthy choices, if you take medication or vitamins, stay consistent with those all seven days. If you don't currently, consider starting a multivitamin or taking a greens supplement, this Teami Greens blend is the best one I've found. I mix it with orange juice and even though it's green, it tastes just like the orange juice. It isn't gritty or grainy. I would also encourage you to have no alcohol of any kind during this time if that is normal for you.

And most important, give yourself grace. If you mess up one day, don't give up or beat yourself up. Just jump back to it.

So why am I doing this instead of a full on diet? I already mentioned, I don't like that word. Eating good shouldn't be considered a diet. But, for one, I don't care about the number on a scale or the number on the tags of my clothes. I care about how I feel. I want to feel good. Two, in the past when I have dieted, I feel restricted and deprived. It ends up with me getting upset and quitting. And three, wellness isn't just about your weight. It's about your overall health. To be overall healthy. we need to make sure we are moving our body, drinking water, and spending time off screen just as much as we need to watch what we consume.

With 75 Hard, one of the steps is to take a progress selfie every day. To me, that sounds annoying. I do not want to take 75 (or more if I mess up) selfies. However, I do thinking taking a picture at the beginning, on April 1st, and at the end, on April 30th, is a good way to see if you notice a difference. That said, the best way to notice progress is by how you feel!

To help you keep track of your April Wellness Challenge, I created a calendar tracker. You can use this to track your progress, your water intake, and mark your treat day. To download the calendar tracker, click HERE.

Will you be joining me for the April Wellness Challenge?

My 12 Favorite Reads of 2016

Reading is probably my most favorite thing to do, outside of spending time with my family. I love reading Christian fiction for the fun, the story and the imagination. Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic For a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living by Shauna Niequis. Technechally I read Fervant at the end of 2015 but this is one of my all time favorite books so I had to add it to the list! This book will change your prayer life forever!

Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out and Lonely by Lysa TerKeurst. Many of us have felt the sting of rejection in our lives. Maybe we even think God Himself has rejected us when He doesn't answer our prayers they way we think He should. Lysa shows us how God is not only not rejecting us, but welcoming us with open arms. There is a study guide and dvd that go along with Uninvited. The dvd sessions were recorded in the Holy Land!

She Reads Truth Book: Holding Tight to Permanent in a World That is Passing Away by Raechel Meyers and Amanda Bible Williams. Raechel and Amanda show us how to stay close to the Word of God even through hard times. They share their own real life hardships and how God would draw them close to His heart through the Word.

Grace, Not Perfection: Embracing Simplicity, Celebrating Joy by Emily Ley. This book is on my list, yet this one I have not read yet! It has been sitting on my desk calling my name! I have been aching to catch up on some book reviews so that I can dive into it. Emily realized through her crazy busy life that she just couldn't do it all. She decided grace was better than perfection.

Nothing to Prove: Why We Can Stop Trying So Hard by Jennie Allen. Jennie understands what many of us feel, that we are trying so hard to prove that we are enough. Enough of a wife, mom, employee, sister, friend, woman. But the truth is, we have nothing to prove. Jennie tells us how to find freedom and stop trying to prove ourselves. With every turn of the page I was crying out, "Yes, yes, yes!" Nothing to prove is available for preorder and comes out next month.

Christmas Books

On a typical December night I will find my kids with the lights off lying on blankets underneath the Christmas tree. Yes. Underneath it. Though, they are getting bigger now, so it's mostly just their toes under the tree. What are they doing under there? Using the lights of the tree to read Christmas books. This scene always melts my heart.

Our family loves Christmas and we love reading. So Christmas books are always a must. Today I want to share a few Christmas books that your children will love.

The Legend of the Christmas Cookie is the heartfelt story of a young boy who he misses his daddy. Afraid he won't see his dad for Christmas, his mom tells him the story of the Christmas cookie. This book even includes a delicious cookie recipe for your family to try.
My Christmas Stocking tells the story of Saint Nicolas and how he filled stockings to give to children so long ago. This is the book my 18 month old nephew always goes to because he likes the stocking shape of the books.

The Berenstain Bears The Very First Christmas is a family favorite for us. We love the Bear family and all of their stories. This one is no different. Papa Bear shares the Bible story of Jesus' birth with his cubs. The end of this book gives discussion questions to get your family talking.

The Beginner's Bible A Christmas Celebration is a fun activity and sticker book your child will love. They will learn about the Christmas story while being interactive.

Goodnight, Manger is the precious story of Jesus' birth, noisy animals and all. Sometimes Mary even had to say, "Shh!" Your child will love this story.

Each of these books would make a great stocking stuffer or Christmas gift or even just a great way to build up your family's Christmas library. What is your family's favorite Christmas books?

Summer Reading {giveaway}

By now, most children are out of school. My youngest two finished a few weeks ago and my oldest two finished last week. So now we are in full on summer mode!

Summer means swimming, ice cream trucks, riding bikes, blowing bubbles, flying kites and so much more. However, kids often think it means tv, computers, and video games. And those things are okay, but not something that we should spend all day doing. One way our family is intentionally keeping our summer active, is by following these guidelines:
We printed this picture and it hangs above the computer, on the refrigerator and by the tv. For the printable version, click HERE.

Electronics may not be used until my kids have completed all of the items on the list. They must spend time with God, complete all of their chores, read (this can be books, Bible, newspaper, comic books, anything!), do physical activities, and practice their instrument. Once they have done all of these things, which will take them less than 3 hours, they are free the rest of the day to watch movies, play video games, etc. However, often times my kids get playing outside and 40 minutes turns into 2 hours. Or my daughter tries to master a song on the piano and 20 minutes turns into an hour. Or my girls get to reading and can't put the book down and read for hours! But the idea is to get them doing something spiritual, physical and mental before using electronics.

What are your family's rules for activities before electronics?

Today I want to share 2 fun books with you that your kids will love this summer. The Channing O'Banning books!

Summer reading adventures for your kids. #tommymommy #summerreading

Channing O'Banning and the Turquoise Trailis all about Channing finding something at her school. She thinks it's a great discovery but things don't turn out like she expected. Through a series of events, Channing learns that God's art is the greatest of all.

Channing O'Banning Book and the Rainforest Rescueis about Channing's best friend who goes a little crazy over new boy, Marco, at school. But Channing isn't wanting any of that! Marco ends up going on family vacation with Channing and she learns he's not so bad and that friendship is important.

To enter to with BOTH Channing O'Banning books, complete each task in the rafflecopter below.

Think On These Things {giveaway}

Everywhere we turn, we are faced with things that are engraved in our hearts and minds. Things that are inappropriate. Things that are not pleasing to God. From movies to tv shows, from wesbites to magazines, from billboards to books, it's everywhere.

What does the Word of God say about this?

It says to think on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. So much of what is going on in our world is not praiseworthy. We must choose to think on the good and turn our back to what is not.

Take this verse. Print out the image (for FREE printable link, click HERE). Memorize this verse and strive to apply it to your life.

Let's be a community that thinks on things pleasing to the Father.

I love to read. Reading is what relaxes me and helps me unwind. I can do without the tv, I can even do without the computer or phone, as long as I can read. My girls are the same way. We love reading. Our favorite kind of books? Inspirational. We especially love inspirational romance. Gasp! I said romance books! Books, Books and More Books!

My daughters and I love to read. From the Bible to devotionals to fiction books for fun. I have been praying that would rub off on my sons. So far it hasn't. Bummer. But we are working on it! Today I want to share a list of great books with you. Some fiction for fun, some for kids and some great resources.

My Amish Boyfriend is a novel about 16 year old Shannon who is ready for a great, fun filled summer. After all, 16 year olds always plan great summers out of school, getting their driver's license and hanging with friends. But things change when her ill mother relocates them to the heart of Amish country. Now Shannon has to learn family, God and what is really important in life.

My own 16 year old and I both enjoyed My Amish Boyfriend!

The Calling is the second in the series Inn Eagle Hill. Bethany has been betrayed by
the one she thought would become her intended and life has changed. She is hanging onto her faith by a thread. Bethany isn't sure what she wants out of life but she is restless to find it.

I enjoy books about the Amish and The Calling doesn't disappoint!
-------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said above, my boys dislike reading. So when we come across faith-filled, action books for boys, I am thrilled!

The Way of Things: Book One - Giants in the Land is the first book in the Giants in the Land series. Humans and giants live in the land and work side by side in peace. Until one day the giants suddenly disappear. Someone needs to find the giants and bring them back. But only the brave, young Thomas volunteers.

My 11 year old loved The Way of Things: Book One - Giants in the Land!

The Prodigals: Book Two - Giants in the Land is the second in the Giants in the
Land series. Thomas is now a older man and caught in a struggle along with his two grandchildren. Though tragedy is all around them, they have to stand up for all they hold dear.

My 11 year old loved also loved The Prodigals: Book Two - Giants in the Land.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Million Little Ways by the precious Emily Freeman is, as always, such an encouragement. God created each of us and created us with unique gifts and talents. Emily encourages us to stop being our biggest critic and start moving into the world with courage to be who God made us to be. I would never, ever consider myself an artist. My stick people look like they've been hit by a bus. But Emily shows us how God has given us each artistry gifts. Each gifting is different and we need to honor God with these gifts.

Check out Million Little Ways!

Confessions of a Wonder Woman Wannabe is a great resource for moms by Jenny Sulpizio. Jenny shares real and practical tips for moms. Sometimes as moms we feel as though we are alone in the things we struggle with. Sometimes we feel like we are failing or just not doing a good enough job. Passion for Reading

Reading has always been one of my favorite things to do.  I am perfectly happy without the tv, just give me a good book.  I love Christian fiction {think Little House on the Prairie type books}, devotionals and of course, the Word of God.  My husband always laughs and tells me that I should read slower to get my money's worth from the book.  {smiles}

My passion for reading has spilled over to my daughters.  They love to read and you often find them with their nose in a book.  At bedtime, my girls are allowed to lay in bed for thirty minutes and read after I tuck them in.  Most nights I walk past their room an hour or even two later and they are still in there with the lamp on reading, because they lost track of time or couldn't put it down. {just like mama} Because my girls love to read so much, it is very easy to encourage them to read the Bible.

My boys are a different story.  My youngest does enjoy reading some, but hey, there are more "boyish," dirty, outside things he'd rather do.  My oldest son absolutely hates to read and will do anything to avoid it.  Getting a thirteen year old who cannot stand reading even a cereal box and has ADD to sit down and read the Bible is quite the challenge.  How can we encourage our children to read the Word when reading is not something they enjoy?

  1. Don't set unobtainable expectations.  Encourage them to start small, like just a couple of verses a day.
  2. Read with them.  While we need to do devotions as a family, each individual person needs to have their own time with God.  However, if your child cannot read or is like mine and just hates to read, read a few verses with them, talk for a moment about the verses, then simply say, "I am going to step away now so that you can reflect on these verses and talk to God."
  3. Lead them by example.  Our children mimic what we do.  No matter what age they are, we are an example to them.  If your child sees you in the Word, they will be in the Word.
  4. Get an age appropriate devotional for them that has short lessons.  Currently I am doing The Dig with my kids.  The Dig has short lessons and each lesson has some scripture.  Even though the lessons are short, they could still be divided up into a couple of days if needed.
  5. Remind them that they don't have to read all at once.  God loves it when we spend time with Him throughout the day.  We don't just have to have a thirty minute or hour quiet time in the morning and that's it!  Kids' attention spans are short anyway, so if they simply spend five minutes reading one verse and praying and do this five times a day, that is twenty-five minutes with God.  Plus it will help them to keep their focus on God all day long, not just in the morning, or bedtime.
  6. Read "regular" books often.  Read story books as a family.  Last year before bed each night we read the Wizard of Oz together.  One chapter a night that I read to the kids.  The more you read together, the more they will come to like {or at least tolerate, smiles} reading.
  7. Make the stories come alive.  If your child is reading in Daniel, take some time one day and act out the story as a family.  It brings the story to life for children.  It can also be a fun thing to do for daddy one night.
  8. Pray for them!  Pray that God would give them a desire and passion for His Word.  Pray that God would help you to be the example they need.
These are just a few ways to help your children get into the Word of God.  What other ideas do you have for helping your children read the Bible?

The Boring Parts

Since I began to dive back into the Word of God a few years ago, I have read through the entire Bible twice and currently am working on my third time.  I also grew up in church and know all of the Bible stories taught in Sunday School as well as read through the Bible several times while in Missionettes.  So I know what is in the Bible.

As I have been reading in the Old Testament recently, some of the chapters can be a bit boring.  Now don't stone me, I told God how I felt, He knows.  So and so had so and so.  So and so was from this tribe or that tribe.  The building was made this way.

It can be easy to skim over the parts that are boring.  It is also easy to skim the parts that I know.  I mean, I know the stories of Noah and David and Goliath inside and out, right?  Why read it again?

But the truth is, God's Word is alive.  Every time I read, it is the same, yet different.  God reveals different parts to us at different times.  Skimming the Bible makes me think of skimming on a workout.  You do benefit from barely working out, but why not get the whole effect?  Why not really workout and experience everything working out can offer?  Why skim the Bible?  God shows us something every single time we read.  Why not really read every word and experience all God can offer?

"For the Word of God is alive and active..."  Hebrews 4:12

When we read the Bible, we need to first pray asking God to reveal to us what He wants us to see.  Then read each and every word.  Do not skim, do not skip.  Get the full benefit.

Today is the last day to enter to win a $30 gift certificate to Cap Creation!  Be sure to comment!  Click here to details.

Sweet Blessings~
